The Sedona Main Street
Program nominates Cheers for Arizona Main Street’s Best Medium Scale
Renovation Project.
Cheers, located at the corner
of Hwy. 89A and Forest Road, completed façade and street frontage
improvements to improve curb appeal, enhance pedestrian flow, with ADA
compliant ramps and sidewalks that our community lacked and needed for
the comfort of all who shop in our district. This retail store is
adjacent to our Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center and a new retail and
lodging development, linking these high volume visitor locations with
the SMSP business core.
Cheers redesigned and
increased their visitor parking volume with spaces behind their retail
building. The handicapped parking remains in the front of the location,
but now has ramps to accommodate wheelchair access. Cheers enhanced
their appearance with new paint, new awnings and new signage. Cheers
redeveloped 1000 square feet. They installed a rock wall bench and a
patio area - using separate contractors for the concrete, stone,
electrical, iron and landscape work - while improving the connection to
the current public sidewalk along their street frontage.
Once the access to the City
sidewalk was completed, they went about making it the space comfortable
for customers and visitors to our District. New patio umbrellas,
benches, outdoor furniture, low-voltage lighting, trash and recycling
containers were purchase. The costs for these items was and additional
$8500.00. The total patio area development cost was $34,780.00 or
approximately $35 per square foot, and the overall reinvestment is
$47,200 that was completed in four weeks to minimize the disruption to
their business.
According to the owner and
managers, “Whether or not it is entirely due to the enhancements, we
couldn’t be happier with the outcome. Even if we hadn’t recovered our
development costs, the compliments from fellow merchants and happiness
from our customers would have helped justify the expense.” Since the
completion of the Cheers project, the owners are proud and happy to
announce the marked increase in sales at this location.
Cheers is a fine example of
the benefit derived from business and property reinvestment, and a
shining model for the Sedona Main Street District. The final project is
equally beautiful as a focal point and gathering space, adding to the
sense of place in our Uptown.
For all these reasons, SMSP
nominates Cheers for the Arizona Main Street’s Best Medium Scale
Renovation Project.
