Sedona Main
Street Program enthusiastically nominates Hyatt Vacation Club & The
Shops at Piñon Pointe for Arizona Main Street Best Public/Private
Partnership of 2005. What makes this project unique is how access to the
surrounding area and business district was integrated into the basic
design. This was not an easy task considering the topography of the
site. Most resort complexes strive to draw people in and keep them
contained within their property, in an effort to retain as much guest
spending as possible. In contrast, Hyatt Pinon Pointe committed from
the very beginning to integrate the resort into the surrounding
community - starting with membership and participation in Sedona Main
Street Program events and activities, and continuing with elements such
as way-finding signs that direct patrons to the rest of the Uptown
shopping district.
Hyatt Piñon
Pointe made a major investment for infrastructures improvements at one
of Sedona’s busiest intersections. The junction of Hwy. 179 & Hwy. 89A
was a “T” intersection on one corner of the Hyatt property, and
improvements changed the intersection to four-way “X”. A connector to
the adjoining USPS property was created, which improved both the safety
and convenience of egress for significant resident traffic.
In addition
to this newly created main vehicle entrance, Hyatt Piñon Pointe added a
second vehicle access point on a side street and provided ten (10) bus
parking spaces to accommodate the Uptown shopping district’s overall
need for tour bus parking that is easily accessible with nearby
amenities. The Retail Shops layout incorporates two staircase access
points to “Main Street” sidewalks. The 32,000 square feet
of retail space contained within the project can be easily accessed by
Sedona Main Street District pedestrian and vehicle traffic, while Hyatt
resort guests can easily walk to explore the rest of Sedona’s historic
commercial core. The resort’s common grounds display over twenty (20)
pieces of public art. Every effort was made to make Hyatt Piñon Pointe
an integral part of the surrounding community, not just an adjoining
location.
The Shops
at Piñon Pointe integrates an extensive public courtyard with
way-finding signs, public art, water-features, low-level ambient
lighting, native plantings in large pots and landscaped islands
consistently featured throughout the plaza. Outdoor seating areas are
prevalent and situated at the front of the plaza and courtyard to take
advantage of the phenomenal Red Rock views from atop the hill. These
outdoor café areas overlook “Main Street” (Hwy. 89A) and their
visibility from the street level below is inviting, once again
integrating the Main Street District and community as well.
Hyatt Pinon
Pointe worked with the Sedona Historical Society to develop historical
plaques for use along the facades within the interior of the courtyard.
These sixteen (16) plaques tell the stories of Sedona’s pioneers, local
geology and the westerns filmed in Sedona, reflecting our small town
rural character with attractive cultural-heritage design elements.
For all these reasons, we believe Hyatt Vacation Club & The Shops at
Piñon Pointe is
Arizona Main Street’s Best Public/Private Partnership of 2005.
