Sedona Main
Street Program proudly nominates Institute of EcoTourism for Best Public
Improvement Project funded by private dollars for the publics benefit.
Institute
of EcoTourism created a state of the art interpretive center that was
originally a dilapidated ceramic artist studio. The building was
transformed by using only recycled or sustainable harvested materials.
The drywall came from recycled gypsum. All lights are low voltage
fluorescents, saving up to 75% on energy costs, and the lights are
motion sensored to only go on with motion and automatically dim with the
absence of motion. Solar Tubes (tube shaped skylights) are used
throughout the structure for additional sunlight to reduce those energy
costs even more.
Flooring
was another Institute of EcoTourism feat. The wall to wall carpeting was
made from 75% reclaimed fiber and tiles made from recycle automobile
tires are throughout this structure.
The
Institute of EcoTourism created this interpretive center that provides
interactive exhibits on natural & cultural history, a theatre for the
arts (both film & performance) and a native plants garden. The Center is
an example of form and function. It is a place where the structure is an
exhibit in itself and housing both the Institute of EcoTourism and
reflecting its Covenant of Mutual Regard.
The
Interpretive Center is now a model of environmental design and green
building. It inspires and educates the millions who visit and will be
Arizona’s first privately funded certified green building by the United
States Green Building Council in Washington, DC.
Two Green Thumbs up for this eco-friendly and inspiring project!
