The Main Street program utilizes local business leaders to sharpen the competitiveness of existing business owners. The nominations in this category have demonstrated leadership that has been a model for other Main Street businesses. These nominees are committed to working to build a commercial district that responds to today's consumers' needs.

Sedona Main Street Program proudly nominates Los Abrigados Resort and Spa for the 2006 Business Excellence Award. A 22-acre resort brimming with amenities from numerous recreational options to fine dining and shopping, Los Abrigados Resort & Spa provides a premier visitor experience. What makes this business stellar is that it leads by example in innovative ways to give back to the Sedona Main Street District in which it resides, as well as the entire Sedona community, while continuing to make sizeable investments in the future of our historic core commercial district.

 

Highlights of business impact on Sedona Main Street District:

  • 100% occupancy of tenant businesses within resort property

  • Major employer in SMS District with 389 jobs - 266 FTE & 123 PTE as of June 2005

  • Reinvestment in SMS District via capital infrastructure improvements over $5 million in the past 6 years

  • Exemplary property & buildings as evidenced by its use for photo exhibits of desirable architectural

  • details, landscaping, utility screening and pedestrian nodes/public art/amenities in recently updated

  • and adopted design guidelines for SMS and Character Districts

In addition, Los Abrigados Resort & Spa deepened its commitment to the Sedona Main Street District this year with the purchase of 21 adjoining acres of land. This $8.4 million investment enables the preservation of historically-significant buildings and provides for creation of 1) a new community gathering space and parking facility, and 2) an easement for public access to Oak Creek, a year-round flowing waterway. The planned additional lodging will be constructed using environmentally-sensitive techniques.

RED ROCK FANTASY PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS 

  • An annual holiday lights display over 20 acres of the Resort taking place over 7 weeks in late November and December each year for the last 15 years

  • The number of lights has grown from 300,000 lights to a total in excess of 1 million lights displayed at 50 different sites on property, making it a destination attraction

  • During a normally-slow tourist period, this event buoys business with the sale of 50,000 event tickets, the discounting of group ticket packages for sale by competing lodging facilities, plus inclusion of tickets to guests at the Resort and associated local properties

  • Generates District visitation and increased patronage/revenues for area galleries, restaurants, tour companies, gift shops and other lodging businesses, which in turn increases sales tax revenues

  • Provides seasonal part-time employment during holiday season, with multi-generational appeal

  • Over the last 15 years, this single event has generated over $200,000 in donations to non-profits ranging from the Twin Tower Orphans Fund to Sedona Historical Society (within SMS District)

  • Support to other Sedona Main Street businesses include promotional support in print media and television, ticket discounts for inclusion in group promotions, and permission to use Los Abrigados name

  • Beneficiary businesses of this event include local lodging, restaurants, gift shops, and tour companies within Sedona Main Street District and greater Sedona area

ADDITIONAL MARKETING & DONATIONS HIGHLIGHTS 

  • ILX Dollars – gifts to vacation club owners for use in local businesses (e.g., $486,000 ILX dollars redeemed and distributed more than $100,000 in jeep tour certificates to our marketing tours in 2005)

  • Nearly $1,000,000 is the value attributed to room nights used by their overnight tour guests

  • Millions of dollars spent on Telemarketing in order to drive individuals to Sedona as a destination

  • BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB (Sedona) – recent gift of $50,000 total over 5 years

  • BARBARA ANTONSEN MEMORIAL PARK (Sedona) – recent gift of $50,000 over 5 years plus a special wine dinner with $25/ticket being donated to the cause

  • WINE OF THE MONTH PROGRAM – specific local charities receive a designated portion of the wine sales over the course of a month
