Economic Restructuring Category

New Building Project

This category recognizes a new building project that has helped boost the economic profitability and created vitality within the district. The nominations in this category represent projects of new construction and/or in-fill development that have had significant impact in the main street district.

The Sun Building

Sedona Main Street Program proudly nominates the Sun Building as the AZMS Best New Building Project. This new construction is in-fill development which made a significant impact on our District.

In just over one year’s time, the Sun Building transformed an entirely weed filled lot on the corner of Jordan Road and Apple Avenue into a beautiful Sedona landmark.  Its’ design and color blend with both the surrounding built and natural environments; its’ placement enhances the corner site; parking is located in the rear of the building, well-maintained landscaping is lush; and all building utilities are well-screened. The context-sensitive design and aesthetic appeal of the Sun Building is only a portion of it’s’ benefits.

The construction went the extra distance beyond its’ own footprint, to install public sidewalks on both street frontages. This private investment created a pedestrian connection to existing City sidewalk on Jordan and added sidewalk to a major portion of Apple with the vision of future connection with the Uptown Enhancement Project or neighboring development.

The Sun Building came to life as “The Healing Family Center.”  Its’ use is multi-faceted, multi-functional, and multi-generational.  The BR Clinic is a whole health clinic integrating western medicine, oriental medicine and mind-body training.  The Healing Family Information Center is a large open space and comfortable haven for both residents and tourists with information on Sedona and their health, including health-related books, music and DVDs.  Their new “Sun Boutique” offers innovative products appealing to all six senses, as well as spa treatments. A second floor provides a large “training room”, used for both Brain Respiration Exercise classes and workshops/lectures. As of this June, they have integrated the Body & Brain Yoga Center, formerly located in West Sedona, with its’ seventy members.
